Kinds of Contributions

FQS—as an interdisciplinary and international forum for information and discussion—is interested in empirical studies conducted using qualitative methods, and in contributions that deal with the theory, methodology and use of qualitative research. Contributions are published in FQS tri-annually within thematic issues, as single contributions, and as contributions belonging to the FQS rubrics: Reviews, Debates or Conferences.

Innovative ways of thinking, writing, researching and presenting are especially welcome. Upon request, we will try to realize Internet specific forms of interaction between authors and readers, e.g. organize an online discussion. We prefer contributions whose conceptualization—e.g. through co-authorship—already shows a multi-interdisciplinary and/or multinational perspective.

In regards to empirical work it is welcomed if authors provide more detailed information about the research process such as field notes and coding process. If lengthy excerpts from a transcript are provided then it is necessary to prove to the editors that data protection has been adhered to.

The submitted contributions should be original ones. They should not have been published or submitted for publishing at any other point in time in a similar form or with generally the same content. After the contribution appears in FQS, it is still possible to publish it elsewhere after obtaining the consent of the FQS editors and with reference to the place of the first publication.

It is strongly recommended that you take a look at the information about the publishing process and manuscript guidelines before submitting a contribution. Ways to publish in FQS include:

  • Editing of of thematic issues

  • Contributions belonging to thematic issues

  • Single contributions

  • Contributions belonging to the FQS rubrics Reviews, Debates or Conferences

Editing of Thematic Issues

FQS Issues are published tri-annually (January, May, September) and deal with topics important for qualitative research(ers): On the one hand, FQS issues introduce disciplinary perspectives on current research methodologies and empirical emphases (Series: "Qualitative Methods in Various Disciplines"). On the other hand there are issues that deal with topics of a general interest for qualitative researchers with various disciplinary backgrounds and nationalities (i.e. archiving, re-analysis, use of technology in the research process, impact of researchers subjectivity on the research process etc.); see issues, already published and future issues.

If you are interested in publishing a thematic issue in FQS or if you have any suggestions for possible topics, please feel free to send an e-mail.

Contributions Belonging to Thematic Issues

Submitting a contribution for a thematic issue usually follows a Call for Papers, published in our Newsletter (or in some mailing lists); in addition selected authors are also invited directly to participate in a thematic issue. Thematic issues are edited by guest editors who organize the review and publishing process in close collaboration with the FQS staff.

Single Contributions

Single contributions can be submitted at any point in time directly to the Main Editor. We are especially interested in

  • contributions in which the results of a qualitative empirical study are presented;

  • theoretical and/or methodological contributions that discuss the state or development of qualitative education and research for selected countries or (sub-) disciplines. Also preferred are contributions that deal with the current status of (social) sciences e.g. in Philosophy of Science, Sociology of Science, History of Science or Psychology of Science.

Contributions Belonging to FQS Rubrics

Contributions belonging to FQS rubrics (Reviews, Debates or Conferences) should be sent to the rubric editors. We recommend that you inform yourself about the profile of the respective rubric before submitting a contribution. To obtain detailed information about the rubrics, please visit FQS Reviews, FQS Debates, and FQS Conferences.
